Lunchtime, just across the bridge from the Isle of Skye, in a crowded cafe.
Our table was tucked in the back corner, in a narrow room just large enough to house two tables side by side, with the smallest of gaps to walk between them. The table next to our foursome already had two people eating when we were seated.
The couple at the other table appeared to be two women having lunch together. It was hard not to notice them, in part because their table was crammed within an arm's reach of ours, but mostly because they had made some very "interesting" clothing and makeup choices.
As we were discussing our lunch selections, both ladies kept glancing towards our table. Finally, the one with the platinum blonde bob under the black beret, the bright blue eyeshadow applied haphazardly, and the see-through black shirt opened the conversation.
"Are you from America?" She asked in a shockingly deep, manly voice.
"Yes, we are. Is it that obvious?"
"And where are you from?"
We proceeded to name our hometowns, with Steven following last: "Los Angeles."
Both their eyes lit up. The other lady chimed in:
"Have you met Simon Cowell?"
Steven shook his head. But the opening they had been waiting for had presented itself.
"Well, WE HAVE." She crowed with glee.
Clearly, they had just been waiting to impart this little tidbit of information. We continued the conversation, learning that the oddly dressed one was Dolores, and the other lady was Acqua Jane.
"Like aqua, but with a 'c'" she informed us.
I had trouble remembering this, and kept calling her Dancing Opal, so it became her new nickname on the trip. The self-proclaimed folk duo had been on Britain's Got Talent, gotten two "yesses," met Simon Cowell, and had followers on YouTube. They lived on the Isle of Lewis ("where Donald Trump's mother is from, so if he wins the election it will be famous!") and people were always stopping them to take selfies.
They clearly wanted us to take a selfie with them.
We declined.
This became one of our biggest regrets of the trip. How much better would this story be with photographic evidence?!
So, I will leave you with their clip from Britain's Got Talent. The rest is up to your imagination.
