TRAVEL ADVENTURES|EUROPE TRIP 2016|SCOTLAND|IRELAND|GERMANY|ITALY|NETHERLANDS|AUSTRIA|SWITZERLAND

Day 22

We had a full day in Amsterdam and no real plans, other than to explore the city.  Around 11am everyone met at the hotel lobby to go find some breakfast.

After we had eaten, we wandered by the Anne Frank house, then the group split up to explore on our own.  Some had massage or pedicure appointments, some took a nap, and some went shopping or visiting cafes.  Lori, Ryan and I wandered to an antiques market, a store dedicated to selling everything cat (they had jewelry made of cat hair!) and spent a bit of time trying to find a coffee shop that was not a "coffee" shop.  (Hint; the ones with the bouncers at the doorway are usually "coffee" shops).

We went back to the hotel after a while; Lori had a pedicure scheduled and Ryan wanted to take a nap.  Exciting times.

Around 5, the group met back up at Cafe Remember in the Red Light district.  The day had been somewhat overcast until now, and on my walk to the cafe the sun came out and I enjoyed some pleasant sightseeing.

We had scheduled a boat tour at 6:30, so once the group was all together we walked to the boarding location for our tour.

The tour was fantastic.  The young lady serving drinks (did I mention there was a full bar on this tour?) was only on her 3rd day on the job.  She was 17, going to university, and spoke fluent English, Dutch, Spanish and German.  (She was born in the Netherlands but her parents moved to Spain when she was young.  She started learning English at 14). Her English was very good; she spoke without a noticeable accent.  She was very sweet and by all impressions mature, smart, and driven.  I don't remember her name, but I think it was something like Maertje.

There was about 20 people on this tour, so our group made up roughly half of the tourists on the boat.  About half of the other half were quite intoxicated.  So let's talk about the drunk British guy (you can see him in the background of the photo above, he bears a slight resemblance to Robert Pattinson).

I don't know his real name so we're just going to call him Edward.  (You see what I did there?)

Eddie (stumbling up to Maertje):  Where is the bathroom?

Maertje:  Umm... there isn't one.

Eddie:  How can you not have a bathroom on this boat?  I have to take a leak.

The experienced tour guy operating the boat (we'll call him Maarten) looks at him in exasperation.

Maarten:  Because the tour is only an hour.  Most people go before they get on the boat.

He didn't add "idiot" at the end but it was clearly on his mind.

Eddie then proceeded to claim that he was drunk, and sorry, plus they were serving him alcohol so (apparently) it was their fault he had to take a leak.

So finally they pulled the boat up to the side of the canal next to a public urinal, just to shut him up.  I should mention these urinals are only semi-private.

He got stage fright.

He stood there for about 10 minutes, with the entire rest of the boat tour waiting on the boat, staring at him.  Finally he ran off to find another, more private bathroom.
While he was gone, a couple others wandered off the boat to use the public urinal, since we were waiting anyway.  Finally Eddie returned, everyone got back on the boat, and we continued our tour.

At the end of the tour we wandered around town looking for food.  And of course it was after 8pm and we had a limited selection of open restaurants.  Because that is the theme of this trip.  We stopped in a place called the Bulldog hotel and bar, thinking it had food.  Nope.  So we asked the guy at the front desk where he would recommend.  He suggested a Chinese place, and called ahead to get us reservations with a table big enough for all of us.

The restaurant didn't look like much from the outside, but had great ambiance inside.  Our table was tucked away on a tiny second floor, up a narrow set of stairs.  The room was just big enough for a small table and one large table (to fit the 9 of us) and had a door on the back that let to the outside rooftop patio.  (It was more like a fire exit but we'll call it a patio).

The food was amazing.  Everyone kept calling it the "best Chinese food I've ever had" although to be fair we were all starving by the time we sat down to eat.  After dinner we headed back towards the hotel.  We stopped briefly to have a round of drinks at the restaurant/bar near the hotel (the same one the girls had drinks by the canal at the previous night).  Then it was back to the hotel to rest and get ready for our early flight to Munich tomorrow.
